Baby Kids Can Read: Lesson Twenty-One
Materials:
Word thumb written on a white card. Dimensions are 5 inches high, approximately 24 inches long, in red, lower-case letters 4 inches high. Or, download from designated link.
Session One:
1. Show the cards ‘mommy’, ‘daddy’, ‘hand’, ‘knee’, ‘foot‘, ‘head’, ‘nose’, ‘hair’, ‘lips’, ‘leg’, ‘eye’, ‘ear’, ‘arm’, ‘teeth’, ‘belly’, ‘mouth’ and ‘elbow.’
2. Ask your child to say these words.
3. Touch your child’s thumb and say, “This is thumb.”
4. Let your child touch his/her own thumb.
5. Repeat saying thumb again.
6. Touch your child’s thumb.
7. Hold up the word thumb.
8. Say, “This is thumb.”
9. DO NOT ELABORATE! Allow him/her to see the card no more than ten seconds.
10. Now play with your child. Give him/her your complete attention for a minute or two.
11. Present the word again for the second time.
12. Allow him/her to see it for ten seconds.
13. DO NOT ASK HIM/HER WHAT IT IS!
14. Say, “This says thumb.”
15. Play with him/her again for two minutes.
16. Present the word for the third time.
17. Allow him/her to see it for ten seconds.
18. DO NOT ASK HIM/HER WHAT IT IS!
19. Say again, “This says thumb.”
Repeat Session One two more times before following the steps listed under Next Session. All sessions should be at least thirty minutes apart.
Next Session:
1. Hold the word thumb up to the child.
2. Say, “What is this?”
3. Mentally count to ten slowly.
4. If your child says, thumb. Then make a big fuss. Tell your child you are very proud of him/her. It is wise to hug your child and express your love for him/her physically.
If your child does not say, thumb do not be discouraged. DO NOT SHOW DISAPPOINTMENT! Instead, say to your child, “It is thumb isn’t it?”
Repeat this lesson as needed for four more days, until your child says thumb. If it has not happened by this time, then stop. Wait a week and start over.
If your child has learned thumb simply show him/her the word five more times during the same day, asking him/her each time what it is. Remember to make a big fuss each time he/she answers correctly.
When you feel confident your children knows thumb, and then proceed to the Lesson Twenty-Two.
